Tha Sawks' season will start on time

There’s an email rumor spreading around the Jewish community that the Boston Red Sox, at the initiative of young Jewish General Manager Theo Epstein, had moved opening day to acccomodate Passover. Snopes has a big thread on it. Maybe you’ve gotten this email? It looks like this:

RED SOX GENERAL MANAGER-THEO EPSTEIN ANNOUNCED THAT THE BOSTON RED SOX
HOME OPENER WILL BE POSTPONED TO APRIL 14TH..TO AVOID THE 10 DAYS OF
PASSOVER.

HE NOTED, BECAUSE 3 OF HIS STARTERS WERE JEWISH AS WERE HIS BOX SEAT
HOLDERS, HE WAS FORCED TO MAKE THIS CHANGE IN SCHEDULING.  THE GOYIM
(non-Jews) IN BOSTON ARE ENRAGED AT EPSTEIN’S DECISION.

PROTESTS ARE BEING TENDERED TO THE COMMISSIONER OF BASEBALL’S OFFICE IN
P ROTEST…HOWEVER, BUD SELIG-COMMISSIONER OF BASEBALL WILL NOT BE ABLE
TO ADDRESS THESE PROTESTS –MAINLY DUE TO A SCHEDULING PROBLEM…CAUSED
BY THE FAMILY SEDERS HE AND MRS SELIG WILL BE OCCUPPIED WITH.
YES..THIS IS AN AMAZING COUNTRY.

Well, no matter how amazing you think this country is, it’s just not amazing enough to move opening day for Passover. This year, Passover goes from sundown on April 8th through the 16th, and as you can see from the Red Sox schedule they play every single one of those days except the 16th.

It looks like our wait for a contemporary Sandy Koufax-Yom Kippur moment will go on.

  1. so much for the jewish conspiracy…

  2. Epstein is a self-professed atheist who is married to a goy and probably thinks Mah Nishtana is an emo band. I would be shocked if he even knew when Pesach starts.

  3. i know a lot of people who will be relieved to see this post!

  4. also, the rumor’s comment about the number of jewish red sox players is incorrect: 3 starters??? it’s just youkilis.

  5. Howard Weisband

Boston no longer has three Jewish ball players, yet alone starters. Only Keven Youkilis remains on the team. Gabe Kapler’s last year with Boston was 2006, and today is on the Tampa Bay roster. Adam Stern was the third ball player simultaneously on the BoSox representing our tribe. But he played with them in 2005 and 2006, and only in 46 games with 35 at bats and five hits (one home run, something to remember!) over that two year period. He certainly was not a starter. After playing in two games with no at bats with Baltimore in 2007, he disappeared from the MLB radar screen. Born in Canada, he played just now for the Canadian team in the World Baseball Classic. Canada has been eliminated by Italy!

    * “TO AVOID THE 8 DAYS OF THE PASSOVER HOLIDAY” in 2009 would be April 17, not April 14 as shown below. Actually, 2004 was the last time that April 14 immediately followed Pesach!

Thus, this cute piece is some four or five years old, and somewhat “fermished”.

  7. I just hope that they put a good streak together over this 10 game home stand.
